On Memorial Day it is natural for the country to pause and give thanks to the men and women of the armed forces that work day in and day out to protect our way of life. Thanks and appreciation also has to go out to the families of our nation’s soldiers who support their moms, dads, brothers, and sisters as they are deployed around the world.

SpareFoot.com, an online marketplace of more than 5,000 self storage facilities nationwide, has built up its company’s offerings recently, making it the largest network industry in the country. The company announced yesterday that it has joined INSOMNIAC Self Storage Network (ISSN) as well as incorporated SelfStorageDeals.com and SelfStorageFinders.com, other leading self storage web properties, into its network.

Zoos have been in the news quite a bit of late. There was the cobra that had escaped from a New York zoo that became pretty popular when zoo officials could not find it, even though it had its own Twitter page. In the UK, the Chester Zoo gave Prince William and Kate Middleton a penguin as a wedding gift (which will soon have its own webcam).

While the self storage industry remains robust in the United States, it is foundering in the UK. This is mostly due to a slump in England’s housing market that in turn affects moving companies which are tightly knit to the self storage industry. The UK company, Big Yellow Self Storage, said recovery in the sector was unlikely until the economy improves, bringing its shares down three percent.

There is not a corner of the world that has not been affected in some way by the economic downturn of the last few years. Individuals have been hit hard with many losing their homes and forced to declare bankruptcy. The struggles of large businesses have been well-documented in the media as well. Perhaps the hardest hit has been the small business owner.

Extra Space Storage showed solid growth in its first quarter results and its common stock is selling strong with an over-allotment option being issued yesterday. The company has also announced a quarterly dividend of $0.14 per share on its common stock for the second quarter of 2011.
