The average span of an NFL player’s career is just a few years. In some cities it is unusual to see a bar or nightclub last longer than a year. Being able to last in business, whether it’s professional sports, night clubs, or the self storage industry is not easy. That is why when it does happen it should be celebrated.

A business that makes a profit is a good business. No—it’s a great business. How can it not be since that is the purpose of a business, right? While a healthy bottom line can be enough to call a business—like a self storage facility—great, it is not quite enough for it to be dubbed ‘amazing.’

There are many who believe that nothing that comes easy is worth having. To an extent that statement is true. You can’t do that when you are starting and/or running a business—like a self storage facility. Doing that is hard work. However, when it comes to looking for a self storage facility and being a customer easier is better.

When we are kids we love our birthdays. It’s a great excuse for our parents to pamper us, we can get away with anything, the day is all about us, not to mention the cake and presents! Our opinions sometimes change when we get older, but when it comes to ‘birthdays’ in the self storage industry the older the birthday the bigger reason to celebrate.

Everyone likes to be recognized for doing something well; and even more so when they are considered the best at what they do. The feeling of success that comes with the accolades helps make all the hard work worthwhile. When it comes to the self storage industry (and other businesses) accolades are more than just a pat on the back.

Self storage facilities are often active in charities on a local, national, and even international level. Choosing one has to be hard for a company to do. What kind of reach do they want? Who do they want to help? Do they want to be a primary donor or are they okay with being one of many?

There are all sorts of ways to measure success. In school people will often look to grades as an indicator. On the athletic field championships or personal accolades can be a measure of success. In the business realm many people will look at the bottom line, but for a more long term measure like longevity can be a better indicator.

The picture of success for a self storage industry is something that everyone has their own definition of. For some it may be strictly an economic indicator like making more money than the next guy. Others may consider it accolades. While there are still some that consider the impact made in the community more of an indicator of success.

Effective marketing in this day and age is a challenge. It takes a lot to get the attention of consumers these days since they have so many options. Some companies paid as much as $4 million to advertise during the Super Bowl, a time when they knew 100 million people would be paying attention. That’s a tab that many companies would have a hard time footing.

Helping out and giving back to the local community is a common practice among many members of the self storage industry. In some way, shape, or form self storage companies across the country will do what they can for whom they can.
