When the rains came to Colorado in September, they fell on ground that had recently been burned by wildfires. Trees and underbrush that normally held back rainwaters from flooding were gone.
For days, record-setting rainfall deluged the area. Some areas received as much as 18 inches in a 24-hour period. When it was all over, the flood destroyed or damaged over 2,000 homes, washed out hundreds of miles of roads, and caused damage across almost 2,000 square miles. [More]

Westy Self Storage, a self storage company with 16 locations throughout New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, announced today that it has started a drive to collect materials to be used to clean up birds and animals affected by the BP oil spill cleanup. Donations can be dropped off at any of Westy’s locations. For the oil cleanup project, Westy is collaborating with another organization, the New Jersey Warehousemen and Movers Association (NJWMA). Westy will store each donation temporarily and then consolidate all the donations at its Stamford, Connecticut location. Then the NJWMA will transport the donations south. [More]

Minnesota residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed by yesterday’s tornadoes may be eager to start the process of cleaning up, repairing, rebuilding, or in some cases, starting over. Some might like to go through their homes in order to salvage and store whatever possessions they can in self storage facilities, hopefully before tornado-damaged roofs begin to leak and water damage sets in. But officials say that it is not safe to begin the cleanup and recovery process yet. [More]
