What can you do with a large, empty building that was previously used as a discount retail superstore? Make a self storage warehouse out of it. That’s what several retailers and real estate developers, after trying unsuccessfully to sell vacant buildings in a rough real estate market, are concluding. Over the summer, a group of Dallas real estate developers bought an old Walmart and converted it to a Just Store It facility. Now Menards has followed suit, turning its old Eau Claire, Wisconsin facility into a self storage business -- Menards Self Storage.

Four Dallas-area residents, tired of looking at an empty Walmart building that has stood empty for six years, have decided to buy Walmart’s old retail building and convert it into a self storage facility. The Walmart will be turned into a Just Store It. The interior demolition work is already finished, and work on the interior renovations began today. The development is the brainchild of developer Brad Tidwell of Dallas, who looked at the old Walmart building and saw a conversion deal.
“Every time I see a new idea,” Tidwell explained in the Sunday Longview News-Journal, “my first thought is, ‘will this work in Longview?’”

Pipe Spring National Monument Superintendant John Hiscock and Tribal Chairman Timothy Rogers of the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians have announced that a new storage facility, to be used for museum collections and to hold Paiute cultural artifacts, will be opened on the grounds of Pipe Spring National Monument. A grand opening for the facility will be held on Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m. (Arizona time). The opening celebration will include speakers, tours, and refreshments.
The new storage facility has 4,400 square feet of space, meets LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification requirements, and includes separate storage rooms for collections owned by the National Park Service and by the Paiute. The building also has office space for National Park Service and tribal curators. Although the Kaibab's collection of artifacts is fairly small, the Tribe hopes to expand the collection now that a dedicated, state of the art facility is available in which to store items.
