A saxophone wailed while a trumpet belted out a melody. Jazz music swelled around the room. Men on the dance floor swept and dipped and twirled their partners to the tunes played by the dance band. On the sidelines, toes tapped and fingers snapped. The air pulsed with the vibrant music played by popular jazz artists in the golden era of jazz – Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Count Basie, Jelly Roll Morton, and Lester Young. It was the scene of a typical dance floor.
