How often do you see people move in the dead of winter? Not very often, right? No, while it may be cooler to work the weather doesn’t allow for moving in the winter (at least not without an added measure of difficulty). Summer is the time to move, and as a result often ends up being a busy time in the self storage industry.

The toughest part about any business—self storage or otherwise—is not getting ready to open. It’s engaging people and getting them to walk through the door. Companies will spend thousands and some millions of dollars in elaborate advertising campaigns, but many in the self storage industry like to try a simpler route. They just hold a contest.

Every business—self storage and otherwise—has certain demographics that it will hold special appeal for. When it comes to the self storage industry there are a number of demographics that the industry can target, but one in particular is the college student.

When you open your business the tough part is over. Next to some marketing and advertising the bulk of the work will be the necessary day to day up keep and what is necessary for operations. Do those things right and chances are good that you will be a success. However, when the day is done is that enough?

In this day and age there is one thing that every customer wants, no matter whether they are renting a unit from a self storage facility, buying a new car, or going grocery shopping and that is convenience. People don’t want to have to work hard at spending their money; they work hard enough to earn it. Many within the self storage industry are doing what they can to make their business as user-friendly as possible.

Have you ever seen an advertisement and wondered what in the word the marketing executives were thinking when they approved it? Advertisements need to speak to the viewers, but preferably in a way that entices them to frequent an establishment, not make it the butt of jokes. Those who fail in this regard will often find themselves lacking in business simply because they failed to get in touch with the people.

Back in the day it only took a quality product and a little advertising to get ahead in the business world. Make or provide something that people really want and you were virtually a guaranteed success. As the 21st century progresses though, it takes more than just a quality product to be a success.

Modern technology has made many common, everyday things at home and at work a whole lot easier. In many cases, things which we once had to wait on someone to help us with have become pretty close to self-serve. Take the self storage industry. Tenants used to have to look in the yellow pages to find a self storage facility and call or drive by if they wanted to find out details on the facility.

When it all comes down to it, people want to be able to do what they do or buy what they buy in the easiest and most efficient manner possible. With the dawn of the electronic age well underway it is becoming more and more common to find businesses, self storage and others, making as much use as they possibly can to make their company more attractive than the next.
