The Passing of Robert Bret, Florida Self Storage Association Executive Director

Sometimes something happens that lets us know just how tenuous and fragile life can be. We express our deepest sympathies to the family of Robert Bret, the Executive Director of the Florida Self Storage Association. He passed away suddenly on June 7 while vacationing with his family in Jamaica. He was 40 years old. He is survived by his 13-year old daughter, his mother, sister, brother-in-law, nephew, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. [More]

Florida Self Storage Association Hosts Executive Retreat

I have worked for companies that held annual retreats. Usually, one or two of the activities during the retreats were good but many of them weren’t. I remember one retreat in particular. Everyone had to attend a session where the folks from the purchasing department talked about purchasing protocol. My whole department never made purchases so the content didn’t apply to us. Many in Self Storage Industry Taking the Fight to Cancer

As of January 1, 2008, there were approximately 12 million people in the United States afflicted with cancer (5.5 million men and 6.5 million women). Research into ways to treat it and hopefully (eventually) cure it one day is ongoing; the problem is that it takes a lot of money to conduct it. Luckily, there are many organizations—like a number of companies in the self storage industry—that have made it a practice to help raise funds to benefit cancer research. [More]

FSSA Opens Registration for 2010 Conference & Expo

The Florida Self Storage Association announced yesterday that it has opened registration for its 2010 "New Horizons" Conference and Expo. Vendor exhibit applications are still being accepted as well. The conference will be held from May 5 to 7, at Disney's Contemporary Hotel, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Although the FSSA conference is held annually, this year several new events have been added to the schedule, including several pre-conference activities. This year's conference is being sponsored by U.S. Door & Building Components, MiniCo Publishing, Noah's Ark Development, Bader Company, Inside Self-Storage, and Phone Smart Sales Solutions.

One of the featured events at the FSSA conference will be panel discussion, called "The Storage Summit." Panelists will include Anne Ballard, from Universal Management Co.; Michael Haugh, from Absolute Management; Brenda Scarborough, from Accountable Management; Marc Smith, from Personal Mini Storage; Steve Wilson, from Hide-Away Storage; and Paul Martin, the keynote speaker. Florida Self-Storage Association Hosts Free Education Session

It's not too late to register for the Florida Self-Storage Association's next free education session. The session will be held next Thursday, January 7, from 9 am to noon and from 1 pm to 4 pm. It will be held at the Miami Lakes Marriott Courtyard, at 15700 NW 77th Court.

The education session will feature three guest speakers. Matt Van Horn, from Cutting Edge Self Storage, will speak about how to turn your phone calls into rentals. Jack Ballentine, from Hammer Down Auction Services, will give a lecture entitled "Assuring Unit Foreclosure Compliance." And Rick Yonis, the owner of Sentry Self Storage, will moderate a free-wheeling open forum conversation on operating within the current economic conditions. [More]
