Now that summer is here, yard sales are springing up all over the place. Some yard sales are sponsored by individuals or single families. Sometimes, families join together to create a huge yard sale in the hopes of drawing bigger crowds. Sometimes, even self storage facilities sponsors yard sales for charitable organizations. LifeStorage in Matteson, Illinois, is one of those storage facilities.

How many colleges do you think there are in the metropolitan Chicago area? Two? Ten? Maybe twenty or twenty five? Would you believe that there are over 80 community and junior colleges, universities, and graduate schools? That means there are a lot of students living in the area.
The end of the school year school year is drawing to a close and that means that many of these college students will be heading home, to internships, or places for summer work – and many of those students need a place to store their belongings for the summer.

An EF4 tornado with winds up to 170 mph ripped through Harrisburg, Illinois, during the morning hours of February 29th. Parts of the city were leveled. Hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged. Within a few sort hours, Operation Blessing (groups of disaster relief teams) sprang into action.
Elementary school teacher in Naperville, Illinois, Janelle Kreiling, felt compelled to do something to help Harrisburg residents. She felt that Harrisburg was like a second home to her because one of her college roommates was from Harrisburg.

Self storage units are used for a variety of different things besides storing personal items or records and documents for businesses. Across the nation, self storage owners and managers have allowed charitable organizations to store non-perishable food, boxes of winter coats, hats and gloves, and toys. All of these things were designated to be given to the less fortunate in their communities. Recently, one self storage facility provided support in a very creative way. Local law enforcement agencies used it to train their canine units.

At Thanksgiving and during the Christmas holidays, people open their hearts – and their wallets – to help out the less fortunate members in their community. People donate toys, food, coats, gloves, and money to various charities in their communities. The holidays are behind us yet LifeStorage in Mokena, Illinois, has decided to continue its food-drive efforts throughout 2012.

Safeguard Self Storage recently acquired its tenth facility. Their newest location is in Chicago and is located at 9001 West 47th street in McCook Village, 15 miles west of Chicago. Safeguard has 10 locations within the Chicago area and 63 stores nationwide.

LifeStorage-Self Storage in Mokena, IL, is sponsoring a community garage sale and Move-In Special October 14th and 15th. It will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This is the first event that the facility has sponsored since merging with LifeStorage.

Ronald Boorstein, who has worked in the self storage industry for twenty-one years, was inducted into the 2011 Self Storage Hall of Fame. Those inducted have made meritorious contributions to the self storage industry and to the Self Storage Association. The ceremony was held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

The Self Storage Association’s (SSA) aggressive efforts to update archaic lien laws throughout the country is slowly paying off. The latest victory is Senate Bill 1394 (SB 1394) that will modernize the Illinois Self Service Storage Facility Act. It has passed both houses and currently awaits the signature of Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.

Typically, self storage has avoided sales tax because it is taxed as real estate, not a service. But that standard is now being threatened in North Carolina as a potential tax on self storage has been introduced to the legislature. Dubbed the “21st Century Tax Modernization Plan,” Senate Bill 658 would impose a sales tax on self storage rentals in the state.
