As Spring Tornadoes Tear Apart Businesses, Self Storage Should Be Prepared

As an F-5 tornado began to form near Joplin, Mo., around dinner time on Sunday, May, 22, the tornado sirens went off only 20 minutes before the tornado hit. The three-quarter-mile-wide tornado left 141 dead, cut a six-mile swath crushing nearly a third of the southwest Missouri city, and pounded 2,000 buildings, self storage facilities among them. Within a matter of seconds, your self storage facility could be without power, phones, cell service and the Internet. And the threat of catastrophic damage to the building is extreme. Tornadoes have battered the country this spring, killing more than 500 people, mostly in the south. Twisters have even struck in Michigan, Massachusetts and North Carolina. Florida Town Debates Possibility of Town-Owned Storage for RVs and Boats

Residents of Shalimar, a town on Florida's Emerald Coast, are debating a proposal to have the town of Shalimar build its own RV and boat storage yard. The issue was discussed at a Town Commission meeting on Tuesday. But the commission did not make a final decision about the boat yard because one member was absent and the members who were present were split fairly evenly on the subject. [More]

If you need to store a boat or an RV, it is wise to check with your municipality to find out the most current rules on boat or RV storage. In some cities across the nation, city councils and village trustees are changing the rules. Many self-storage facilities will accept vehicles for storage, giving boat and RV owners another option if they live in an area that prohibits outdoor storage of large vehicles. [More]
