The Internet is fast becoming a way for customers to search for self storage facilities, but the simple phone call is still the most prevalent way a customer gets information. Statistics show 93 percent of all renters call a facility first and their main question is what size units are available. During the few minutes a salesperson is on the phone, he must build a rapport with the customer and hopefully make the sale. But some employees interact better with customers in person. “Roger the Alien” Seeks Brilliant Self Storage Slogans

“Roger the Alien,” a member of Inside Self-Storage’s trademark online forum, Self-Storage Talk, has posted a request for self storage operators all over the country: come up with a brilliant slogan to put on a billboard.

“Through a bit of finagling,” Roger wrote in a May 26 Self-Storage Talk post, “one of my properties has recently come upon a billboard to use for advertising purposes...I humbly turn to you, the folks of SST, for some ideas.” [More]

Self Storage Talk Participants Breaking Records

Inside Self-Storage announced today that its free online forum, Self-Storage Talk, has passed the 3,000 member mark. The 3,000th member, identified only by his user name, JakeChis, registered for the forum on Friday -- allowing Self-Storage Talk to meet its 3,000 member goal a full two months before its self-imposed deadline of July 4.

Inside Self-Storage had been hoping to meet the 3,000 members goal since mid-March, when it began a community expansion campaign. On March 17, the forum's Community Manager, John Carlisle, announced that Self-Storage Talk had set its goal as 3,000 members by Independence Day. At the time, Self-Storage Talk had around 2,650 registered members. [More]

LinkedIn Poll Shows Location Is Key When Choosing Self-Storage

In another example of how social networking sites can be used to benefit the self-storage industry, PhoneSmart Director Tron Jordheim decided to use LinkedIn, an online professional social network, to find out why professional people choose a particular self-storage company over another. He generated a poll asking, "If you are using or have used self-storage, why did you choose one facility over another?" More than 500 LinkedIn members (out of LinkedIn's network of more than 13 million) responded. Here are their responses:

Fifty percent chose based on the convenience of the location.
Thirteen percent looked for the lowest price.
Twelve percent chose based on special features and amenities.
Another twelve percent chose the facility that looked the cleanest.
Eleven percent simply chose a facility that was recommended to them by someone else. [More]
