A recent article in the Washington Post indicated several signs that the economy in the United States is still slowly recovering. Because home foreclosures have dropped, the housing market is moving and sales are up. Loans have been repaid. Personal finances have improved. People are more willing to eat out, shop, or go on a vacation. Businesses are expanding. And Storage Post self storage is part of the upward swing in the economy.

Image is everything. That is what pretty people and ad executives the world over want us to believe. They don’t want us to hear the other old saying about how it’s what inside that matters most. When it comes to the business world—self storage or otherwise—both sayings are actually true. Sometimes it just takes the right executive and a little sprucing up to see that you are better off with both rather than just one.

Sometimes it is easier just to buy new. Guys—how often did you buy new underwear to avoid doing laundry in college? When you needed new folders for school how often did you reuse the ones you had last year (if you could find them)? When you lost weight did you wear your old skinny clothes or go buy a new wardrobe?

Physical growth is easy to measure. People just have to get on the scale to see how much weight they have gained or use a skin-caliper to check for body fat percentage. The business world is not as cut and dry. Simple size or even profit margins don’t necessarily mean growth.

Success is a term that can mean a lot of different things to a lot of people; it all depends on the context in which the events in question are being viewed. For a businessman success may be measured simply in the bottom line, but a humanitarian would likely use something else to indicate success.

When you open your business the tough part is over. Next to some marketing and advertising the bulk of the work will be the necessary day to day up keep and what is necessary for operations. Do those things right and chances are good that you will be a success. However, when the day is done is that enough?

When it comes to certain products and businesses it is just as important that the outside is as aesthetically pleasing as the “inside” is functionally sound. It is not unusual for consumers to not be interested in giving something a try because they don’t like how it looks. After all, you can only make one first impression, right?

There are certain things that are vital when it comes to the success of a business venture—self storage or otherwise. For one, you have to have a product that people will want to have or use. Beyond that, you have to have a name that people will know and recognize. If potential customers do not know who you are they can’t frequent your establishment.

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone there is one thing that is probably pretty safe to say about the entire country—it’s cold. Air conditioners are being turned off, shorts are being put away for the winter, and sandals are headed to the back of the closet. It’s time for heaters, long sleeves, coats, and warm fuzzy socks; whatever it takes to stay warm and toasty while it’s cold and frosty outside.
