Typically a self storage unit has been the place where something has been hidden or the location of some sort of crime, but in recent years the industry has stepped out and started to take a leading role in some programs.

The creation and ensuing popularity of reality television has made many people in Hollywood wonder what can work and what will not work as entertainment on television. It goes without saying that reality shows are less expensive to produce, but if you don’t have something that will grasp the attention of viewers that will not matter. A failed show no matter how expensive or cheap is still money lost.

One of the hardest parts about succeeding in business is in getting the name of your business out there. The greatest business model with the most fantastic product will not make a nickel if no one knows it exists. While advertising can help accomplish that task sometimes it is other methods of exposure that can end up making the difference.

The Self Storage Association held its Fall Conference & Trade Show in Las Vegas on September 5-7 at Ceaser’s Palace. Charity Storage and Kure It Cancer Research were there and offered a way for the self storage industry to give back to the communities that they are in.

Years ago when reality television first hit the airwaves there were many that thought it was just a fad; that eventually the public was going to get tired of it. After all, for the most part every reality show focused on people being people just in different settings and situations. Instead of fading away reality television has become stronger than ever making it clear that sometimes we just like to watch regular folks.

The notion of a crime scene investigation—more commonly known thanks to the popular television show as CSI—at a self storage unit is nothing new. After all, it is not an uncommon thing to hear about a crime being committed at, in, or near a self storage facility. Movies and television shows often have various nefarious deeds taking place in or around them as well.

Society moves fast these days. What could be trending on the World Wide Web one minute could be never heard of again just hours later. With the way that society is bombarded with new and amazing things everyday something has to truly grasp the attention of main stream America in order to last. One thing about man has never changed throughout the annals of time. Man has always been interested in trying to make a quick profit. Whether it was through legal or illegal means did not always matter to some; in the end it was all about getting rich quick by finding a buried treasure. In recent years many people have found their buried treasure deep inside the contents of a self storage unit.

Back in 1989 two witless time travelers sparked a catch-phrase that would stand the test of time much better than the movie that it came from. After Keanu Reeve’s Ted stated that strange things were afoot at the Circle K, for years to come there were “strange things afoot” just about everywhere. Fast forward to 2012 and the phrase still applies—especially when it comes to purchasing self storage units at auction.
