Why does everything have to cost money? Do you want to go to the movies? Be ready to spend $40-50 dollars if you get popcorn and something to drink—and that’s at a matinee! A tank of gas can run upwards of $75 for larger vehicles. Even the cheap steak at the grocery store is a little on the expensive side now.

In a report in June of 2012, mobiThinking stated that there were 331.6 million cell phone subscribers in the United States. Ten years ago it was only 134.6 million subscribers. This rising demand for bandwidth for all of these subscribers increases the need for the construction of more cell towers. Many of the tower companies seek out self storage businesses and build their towers on the rooftops of the storage buildings or on the ground.

Back in the 1980s the popular cartoon G.I. Joe would always end with a lesson for kids to take away after enjoying the show. The basic point of each and every lesson was that ‘knowing was half the battle.’ Little did kids know when they were watching the show that the lesson at the end would be one that would prove true when they became adults in the business world.

When it comes to the self storage industry—or any other enterprise for that matter—the main focus of the business is to make money. Every business will have make the bulk of it through their primary function, i.e. the self storage industry providing space for self storage, but every company is always looking to make a little more when they can.

When is a self storage business a provider for cell phones? When the business allows a cell phone company to erect a tower on its property. And this arrangement could be more lucrative than what was originally understood. At least it was for the SecureCare Self Storage Inc. in Wilmington, North Carolina.
