I have a friend who grew up in the countryside. His family owned two acres. There were only 5 members in his family. That was a lot of space for not very many people. When the rains came to Colorado in September, they fell on ground that had recently been burned by wildfires. Trees and underbrush that normally held back rainwaters from flooding were gone.

For days, record-setting rainfall deluged the area. Some areas received as much as 18 inches in a 24-hour period. When it was all over, the flood destroyed or damaged over 2,000 homes, washed out hundreds of miles of roads, and caused damage across almost 2,000 square miles. [More]
