Self Storage News Roundup for June

Extra Space Storage has recently expanded its holdings in Hawaii. They finalized the purchase of two self storage facilities. One is in Honolulu and one is in Central Oahu. These two facilities sold for $ 30 million and were purchased from Jupiter Holdings LLC, which is based in California. This increases Extra Space’s facilities to 7. Those facilities are on Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii Island. [More]

SpareFoot in Austin, Texas, Wins an Award

SpareFoot, the world’s largest online marketplace for self storage, was recently named the Best Place to Work in Austin, Texas, for mid-sized companies (businesses with 51 to 250 employees). There were 20 finalists in this category.

SpareFoot CEO Chuck Gordon said he’s “honored and overjoyed” that the company he co-founded has received this award. [More]

New Self Storage Facility Opens in Key West, Florida

Key West, Florida, is an island that is about 4 miles long and 2 miles wide. The original Spanish term for it was Cayo Hueso which literally means "Bone Island." It is said that the island was littered with the remains of bones from Native American battlefield or burial ground. The owners of a long-vacant warehouse - a 'skeleton' of a former business - repurposed the building into a new self storage business. [More]

Zombies Come to the Self Storage Industry

Pop culture is full of zombies. The BBC aired the first of a three-part miniseries last night about zombies. There was the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which was a parody of Pride and Prejudice. Then, there was the recent movie Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies where good ol' Abe leads a team of Secret Service agents to fight and destroy an outbreak of the Confederate Undead while the Civil War rages on. There's even the game Zombies, Run! for smart phones.

Now, the self storage industry has hopped on the band wagon and joined the zombie craze. Door to Door Storage Inc. launched a zombie-themed infographic with the hopes it will provide customer appeal while also giving information about their product and services. [More]

Self Storage Units Are 'Very Secure'

The “Good Morning America” program ran a story that discussed how thieves would break in and steal items from self storage units. The report said that break-ins at self storage facilities were a growing problem in the industry. However, they didn’t cite any crime statistics, didn’t say how they came to that conclusion, and didn’t have any comments from someone within the industry.
