It’s common knowledge in the business world that it costs less to retain a customer than it is to gain a new one. So, giving excellent customer service should be a top goal of every business. The city of New Port Richey, Florida, decided they wanted to know which of their businesses had the best customer service. And the best way to find out was to let the customers have a say – because the customers always know best.

The United States Commerce Association (USCA) selected Vail Ranch Self Storage in Temecula, California, as the 2011 Best of Temecula Award in the self storage category. The Best of Business award honors exceptional local businesses across the United States. Based in New York City, the USCA yearly awards companies that have achieved marketing success and that provide exceptional service to their customers and to their community.

The self storage industry is one that is primarily composed of local businessmen and women; there are some major corporations (REITs) involved in the industry, but they only own about 10 percent of all self storage facilities in the United States. This can make earning recognition that much more important since with awards of any kind often comes free publicity.

A bad economy. Bankers hesitant to lend money. An up-scale community not very pleased to have a self-storage facility as a neighbor. These could be insurmountable odds. But not for iStore Self Store who was recently awarded the 2011 Facility of the Year Overall Winner by the mini storage business. It is the newest state-of-the art and environmentally conscious self storage provider in Birmingham, Alabama.

The White House honored a moving company based in San Luis Obispo as one of 100 companies that impact the economy and inspire young budding business people to start their own business. The criteria required to make it on the Empact 100 list includes being a 30 year-old (or younger) U.S. entrepreneur, have a business with an annual revenue of more than $100,000, and provide jobs for others.

Getting started in business can be difficult. The challenges involved in getting it up and running, not to mention the act of day to day operations, can be daunting to handle. Throw in the arduous but vital task of advertising and it can be too much to handle!

Ronald Boorstein, who has worked in the self storage industry for twenty-one years, was inducted into the 2011 Self Storage Hall of Fame. Those inducted have made meritorious contributions to the self storage industry and to the Self Storage Association. The ceremony was held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
