As first reported on October 17 and updated on October 19 on wtvm.com (a Raycom Media station and ABC affiliate), the Columbus (GA) Police are investigating a large break in at one of two Xxtra Storage Facilities in Columbus: at 1125 Floyd Road.
Storage Xxtra has 10 locations in Georgia, including Atlanta, two facilities in Columbus, Cumming, Fayetteville, Hiram, McDonough, Newnan, Peachtree City and Villa Rica. According to their website, Storage Xxtra offers computer-controlled gate access, 24-hour video recording, truck rental and moving supplies (including boxes), as well as month-to-month leasing and easy-access climate control. They also offer extended hours from 6AM-9PM, Monday through Sunday, and are willing to schedule other access times, if necessary.
Regarding insurance for stored property, their website claims "if it's worth storing, it's worth insuring." They offer optional insurance protection through a local leading insurance provider, and offer assistance in completing the forms necessary to secure insurance on client’s belongings as well.
Columbus is a consolidated city in Georgia, whose county seat is Muscogee. It is the principal city of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area, and joins with the Auburn, Alabama metropolitan area to form the Columbus, Georgia-Auburn, Alabama Combined Statistical Area. Columbus is the third largest city and fourth largest metro area in Georgia, and lies approximately 100 miles south of Atlanta. Fort Benning, a major employer, is located just south of the city in Chattahoochee County. Columbus is also home to several museums and tourism sites, such as the National Infantry Museum. These vandals, who remain at-large, cut a hole in the fence, and again cut the locks of 58 different units, 46 of which were currently being rented. The extent of the damage will not be known until each tenant assesses and reports what is missing to authorities.
