The Texas Self Storage Association (TSSA) announced last week that it will include two legal seminars and two webinars as part of its Storage Education series.
The legal seminars will cover Texas self-storage laws relating to vehicle and boat lien sale procedures, which have changed since the last legislative session. The seminars will enable owners, managers, and developers to familiarize themselves with the changes. The two seminars will be held on February 18, at the Omni San Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade in San Antonio, and on March 24, at the Hilton Houston Westchase, in Houston. Each seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
TSSA Executive Director urged Texas self-storage owners and operators to find time for the legal seminars. "We have seen an increase in the number of calls we get from members concerning lien sales procedures," she said.
In addition to covering the changes to Texas lien sale procedures, the seminars will cover changes related to collections, sales taxes, vehicle towing, meth labs, and more. The last half hour of each seminar will be an optional question-and-answer period with the TSSA's attorney, Connie Heyer. The newly updated TSSA Goldbook is expected to be finished in time to be distributed to seminar participants at the February 18 seminar, and participants in the legal seminars will receive a bonus: a free copy of TSSA Auction Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Storage Foreclosures, which was just released.
The TSSA legal seminars are approved by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) for six hours of mandatory continuing education credit. Registration for the seminars has begun. Participants can register through the TSSA website. Registration costs $169 if it done before March 12 at 5 p.m. CST, or $189 after March 12. If more than one person registers from the same company, the cost is $159 before March 12, and $179 afterward, for each additional person. For nonmembers of the TSSA, registration will cost $100 more.
The first of the upcoming webinars will be held March 9, from 10 to 11:15 a.m., on the topic "Management for Higher Profits." Mike Gately, the vice president of operations and management for Daughtry Properties of San Antonio, will cover how to price units to make the most profit, whether the economy is "up" or "down," and how and when to offer discounts.
The second webinar will be held April 27, from 10 to 11:15 a.m., on the topic "Protest Your Commercial Property Taxes and Win." Paul Darden, of the Paul Darden Company in Dallas, an experienced webinar moderator who owns multiple self-storage facilities, will discuss the process that property owners must go through in order to have their taxes lowered, including saving money by doing the leg-work yourself, how to prepare for your hearing, what not to do as you get ready, how to handle objections from the review board, and how to raise your own objections.
Each webinar will cost $25.
