Spring Self Storage Construction Business Booming

The self storage construction business is booming in the U.S. this spring and summer. Some businesses are expanding, while others are being built from the ground up. The projects that are underway include:

Chester Heights Self-Storage Center, in Chester Heights, PA

The owners of the soon-to-be-opened Chester Heights Self-Storage Center, in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, had intended to open their facility last winter. Instead, they will be opening this spring or summer, after ironing out a few last construction problems. The facility failed its water pressure test at the end of March, and will have to re-excavate the line to find a possible leak. In addition, the electrical conduit had to be moved to a new location, farther from the sprinkler system. And paving, fencing, and curb installation have yet to take place.

When Chester Heights Self-Storage Center does open, however, it will have two storage buildings and will be a secure, climate-controlled facility. Owners also have plans to expand-- at some point in the future, they hope to add two more buildings to the existing complex.

Louisville, Kentucky

In Louisville, Kentucky, developers have plans to convert a warehouse to a self storage facility. The warehouse, located on Main Street in Louisville, was occupied by Boland-Maloney Lumber Company for 70 years. The new self storage facility will contain hundreds of storage units, and will open in August, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The conversion will include several upgrades to the site, including the addition of an elevator and an additional floor. The business will have 24-hour staffing, gate-controlled access, and many security cameras. The conversion will cost about $1 million.

Sierra Self Storage, in Porterville, CA

"We're just excited that in this economy we're expanding, we're moving," Sierra's owner, Jerry Clark, told The Porterville Recorder yesterday. It's not easy to get a permit for new construction in Porterville, but Clark managed to do it. Clark is expanding an existing business, which may help to rejuvenate the economy on the south side of Porterville, where Sierra is located. "It will put this part of town on the map," said Clark. Sierra will be adding three new buildings to its site, with wider doors and units that are two feet taller than the ones Sierra currently sports.

"When you're talking about a 10 by 12 box, you really have to be creative," said Clark, explaining why he felt he needed to add buildings that had bigger units with more ceiling space. All three of his new units will be ready by August, but the first one will be ready for renting in just a few weeks.

StorQuest, in Thousand Oaks, CA

StorQuest is opening a new facility in Thousand Oaks, California. The facility will have four stories and more than 57,000 square feet of rentable storage space. Some, but not all, units will be climate-controlled. In addition to rentable self storage space, StorQuest will provide a free truck and driver for its customers to use when they move into and out of their units.
