The first Thai self storage facility opened for business last month in Phuket, Thailand. My Storage, operated by StoreGuard Company Limited, is billing itself as the first state of the art self storage facility to open in Thailand. My Storage, which opened its doors on August 1, is located at the Jungceylon Shopping Center, Patong, Phuket, Thailand.
Like self storage facilities in the United States, My Storage will offer secure self storage units to individuals and businesses. The storage units will be available in a range of sizes, and can be rented for flexible periods of time, ranging from a month to a year or longer. My Storage will also offer boxes and packing materials to tenants.
The facility will not be open 24 hours, at least not at first. Instead, it will be open from 9 a.m. through 7 pm Monday through Saturday, and from 10 am through 4 pm on Sunday.
Self storage, as an industry, started in the United States and then spread to Britain. But over the last several years, self storage facilities have been opening in many other countries. Most new self storage facilities, especially in southeast Asia, have been following the American model, offering simple spaces that are climate-controlled and come in a variety of sizes and with a variety of leasing arrangements. Some new facilities, though, like the new facility that opened in Namibia (in southwest Africa) recently, are focusing on a particular niche. The new Namibian facility is dedicated to cold storage, for example.
