To often these days the mantra for many is that they do what they do (or don’t do) because they don’t want to get involved. They have to look out for themselves. It’s become commonplace on most reality television shows to see friends stabbing friends in the back because they are supposedly putting themselves first for a change.
In a day and age where selfishness has replaced selflessness, it is comforting and, even inspiring, to see that there are still some that do believe in putting others first even if it ends up costing them in the end. Such is the case for the good people at Paul and Jerry’s Self Storage in Spring Hill, Florida.
It is fairly common for many self storage facilities and companies to get involved in charity work. Every holiday season there are hundreds all over the nation that get involved with the U.S. Marines and the Toys for Tots campaign. Several have been known to get involved in turkey giveaways around Thanksgiving. Others have hosted events like a barbecue cook-off to encourage people to get involved with charities.
At Paul and Jerry’s Self Storage they get involved with the community in a different fashion. They act as a hub of sorts for charities that are involved with trying to help the homeless population in and around the Spring Hill area.
A pair of units is stocked will all sorts of supplies that people can use from clothes to furniture to blankets, cooking supplies, and luggage. Local and regional charities come by and pick up items that they need and bring them to people that can use them.
The current manager, Tim Reed, says that past managers use to make the deliveries for charities, directly to those in need. Now he says the self storage facility serves more as a hub, a central location for which help stems from.
Numerous different groups have leaned on Paul and Jerry’s Self Storage for help and supplies. Among them have been Abundant Commodities to Share (ACTS), Devereux Kids, and a relatively new program called For Each 1 Reach 1.
Each month the at Paul and Jerry’s Self Storage they raise money via a yard sale consisting of donated and/ or abandoned items. This money they donate to local clubs like the Boys and Girls Club or the local wildlife refuge.
In light of the times, Reed thinks that the efforts of places like Paul and Jerry’s Self Storage will only be needed even more.
"The need for this sort of thing is going to grow to even more than it is now," Reed said.
