For many of us in life, we put our children first. For someone else, especially a business, to help us do this is truly impressive. But that’s just what the Texas Self Storage Association (TSSA) has been doing for the past 10 years for the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Galveston, Texas. It has raised a total of $249,600 for the children in this hospital during the past decade.

Through various fundraising avenues, including a “Make a Difference” campaign in which self storage customers donate $1 incrementally, TSSA raised $20,802 for the hospital in 2010. It has set its sights even higher for 2011, its 10th anniversary year since starting in 2001. The association’s fundraising committee is busy making plans for this year’s campaign which will culminate at the TSSA’s annual convention in Austin from Oct. 16-18th. It should be a big bash because TSSA will also be celebrating its 25th anniversary at that convention. Some events at the convention include live and silent auctions, as well as a charity poker tournament.

Participating facilities in 2010 were:

  • Allen Mini Storage, Port Arthur
  • Amazing Spaces, Houston, Spring & The Woodlands
  • Brenham Self Storage, Brenham
  • Diamond Self Storage, Pearland
  • Longhorn Road Storage, Saginaw
  • Storage Choice, Dallas
  • Storageland, Arlington
  • White Rock Self Storage, Dallas

The Shriners Hospitals work to improve the lives of children by providing specialty care, research and teaching programs for medical professionals. It also treats critically-burned children as well as provides physical rehabilitation and treatment of emotional trauma. It is a healthcare system of 22 hospitals serving children up to age 18. Orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate are some other services provided in a family-centered environment regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.

“It’s an honor to support an organization that does so much to treat critically-burned children while relying solely on donations from the public and without charging for their services,” said Doug Hunt, TSSA Fundraiser Committee Chairman.

The TSSA, established in 1986, is a non-profit trade association dedicated to enhancing the quality of the self-storage industry in Texas. It provides opportunities for members to increase their industry knowledge through education, research, discussion and the exchange of information. It currently has more than 3,000 member facilities. Every facility that participates is acknowledges by the TSSA at the convention, in the Self-Storage News magazine, the TSSA website, and in the TSSA’s monthly e-mail update to its members.
