For many people deciding that they could use a self storage unit is not a difficult decision to make. The one that is tough though is how big of a unit do you need. You don’t want to get one that is too small. Nothing is more frustrating than packing of a unit than realizing that it is not big enough and having to start all over again. At the same time you don’t want to spend money on space you don’t need.
That is where your friendly, neighborhood self storage manager comes in hand. With the knowledge and expertise that comes with time and training in the business. Whether you are able to give them an idea of just what you have to go into storage or not most storage owners will at least be able to describe what some of the basic unit sizes are similar to.
Most self storage facilities will have a lot of 5’X5’ units, something the size of your typical closet. Most people probably do wish that they had at least one more closet in their homes so that they could be better organized whether it was for seasonal clothes, decorations, or some random things you just don’t want to part with yet.
What if you have more than just a few things that need to go in, but still not much? If you have a few boxes, some clothes and bike that you need space for than a 5’X10’ may be what you need. It is equivalent to a walk-in closet. Ones this size are also good if you have a couple of average size pieces of furniture to store as well.
Perhaps you are a college student that lived in the dorms and you are going home for the summer, but you are flying so you need a place for all your stuff. Another common self storage unit size is the 5’X15’; perfect for a small one-bedroom apartment or dorm room.
If you are in need of more space, say for an old car you don’t want to get rid of or a couple all-terrain vehicles then the 10’X10’ is just right for you since it is the size of a typical one-car garage. People that live in two-bedroom apartments generally go for units of this size.
As you get older you find that you tend to collect more stuff around the house, especially after you stay in one place for a while. Then life changes and you get married. Guys, suddenly you’ll find that you are going to have to clear out a lot of space for her stuff or do something with yours if you move into her place.
A 10’X15’ is usually good for a three-bedroom apartment. If that does not seem to be enough then most self storage facilities will have 10’X20’ units that are about the size of a two-car garage; this is often what a family of four gets (or a guy that had a really large man-cave).
Not too confident after talking with the facility manager? Most self storage facilities will have guides you can take home to look over while you decide how big of a self storage unit you need as well.
