Self Storage, a Family Friendly Business

There is one thing that just about every business wants to be considered and that is to be family friendly. With that kind of reputation a business is often seen as one that you can trust your business, or in the case of the self storage industry, your belongings to. That of course translates into more business and a healthier bottom line.

One self storage company in Hawaii has definitely taken the idea of ‘family’ and made it their way of doing business.

The self storage industry in general is something that has been steadily growing in Hawaii. With family being a large part of the Polynesian culture there are many homes that have multiple generations live under the same roof. That means they are typically in need of space. That is where companies like Hawaii Self Storage come in.

Rather than be just another storage facility they inject the concept of family into how they conduct business. The company is heavily involved in their community doing what they can to make the lives of the people in it a little better.

One of their more recent efforts involves the Bella Project, a non-for-profit charity geared towards helping young women. It runs what is known as the Bella Boutique, an event that gives girls a chance to go to a major high school event, prom, by providing them with new or gently used prom dresses and different accessories. At last year’s multi-location event there were 500 girls that were able to enjoy one of the most special nights of their high school lives. Another 300 dresses were collected in the process.

Efforts like this are nothing new for Hawaii Self Storage. They have a long history of community involvement.

Paying for college is often what keeps many kids from going. Graduating seniors from any of a dozen different cities can apply for the $4000 scholarship which is handed out in $1000 increments each year as long as the student maintains a 3.0 grade point average. From 2005-2009 the company has helped 63 students pursue their educational dreams.

The younger kids are not left out.  For every storage unit sold throughout the year $2 is donated to buy books. Every year the company helps support Keiki Athletics, an organization that promotes youth sports through the purchase of equipment, uniforms, and even the use of storage when necessary. Hawaii Self Storage is also among the many partners involved in Ho'omalu O Na Kamali'I, a shelter for children entering the welfare system.

The community is not occupied with just kids. Hawaii Self Storage is aware that the adults need help sometime too. That is why if people are in need of self storage due to a financial hardship, loss of job, death in the family, or any of a number of reasons they can get up to four months of free storage at a Hawaii Self Storage facility. If employees want to give back the company fully encourages it by offering to donate $20 an hour for every hour they work at a charity to the charity of their choice.
