Hunger is a problem in the United States, especially as the nation continues to go through tough economic times. Currently, there are about 50 million Americans, approximately one third of them children that are at risk of going hungry. However, with the help of charitable drives and the kindness of strangers, that number can be greatly reduced.
Feeding America is in the midst of preparing for one of their major drives of the year, Stamp Out Hunger, along with the National Association of Letter Carriers and a number of other sponsors including Uncle Bob’s Self Storage.
To participate in the drive people need to simply leave a bag or box of non-perishable food items at their mailbox on Saturday, May 14th. Their local mail carrier (or a volunteer)will than pick the food up and take it back to a pre-designated location for sorting and then delivery to food banks and pantries.
“As letter carriers, we see people on our routes six days a week that must rely on the generosity and assistance of others to help provide something as basic as a meal. We’re proud to have established a program that truly provides assistance in every community across the country,” said NALC President Fredric V. Rolando.
For some of the 100,000 neighborhoods that will have collections on May 14th it may not be desirable to set out bags of food for any number of reasons; some folks simply may not like the idea. That is where Uncle Bob’s Self Storage is coming in handy (for some of them).
If you don’t want to leave food out by your mailbox or simply just want to donate to the food drive, you can take non-perishable food items to the good people at any of the Uncle Bob’s Self Storage locations from May 7th to May 13th.
Uncle Bob’s Self Storage has around 350 locations in 24 different states across the country including Florida, Texas, Arizona, New York, Ohio, Michigan, and Maine.
Charitable efforts like this are nothing new to Uncle Bob’s Self Storage. Some of their Texas locations are currently involved in the 2nd Annual Summer Reading Program. The drive has been collecting books to be delivered to local area schools for kids to use free of charge.
In the first drive last year they collected about 3,000 books. So far around 10,000 have been collected with the rest of May still to go!
“Our Company has a culture of giving back to the community. In these difficult economic times, we want to do our part to make sure children have the resources they need to make their summer more enjoyable and productive,” said said Monty Rainey, Area Manager for Uncle Bob’s Storage.
