Self Storage, the World Wide Web, and You

by Kim Kilpatrick June 15, 2011 9:17 PM

Senior citizens can recall a day when computers were considered new-fangled thing-a-ma-bobs. The 30 to 40-something generation can recall a day when computers were mostly for games. Ask the youth of today and they likely could not imagine a world without computers. To be even more specific, they could probably not imagine a world without the internet.

The internet has quickly become the go-to-guy for whatever your needs may be, especially if you are trying to find something, like a self storage facility either near you or somewhere you might be planning on going.

Different websites exist for a number of different services and products now, a virtual yellow pages, but for the country and not just your zip code or immediate area. As the need for self storage facilities has gotten greater over the last few years, a few websites have popped up on the World Wide Web (called aggregators) that will help you find a self storage facility anywhere you want in the United States.

“…The self storage industry has recently started to realize the necessity of web exposure and customers are becoming more Internet dependent, savvy, and looking online first, when shopping for storage,” said Victor Dante of USSelfStorageLocator.com.

Unlike the yellow pages, these websites will do more than just help prospective tenants find a self storage facility in Topeka, Kansas or Anchorage, Alaska. Sites like USSelfStorageLocator.com, USstoragesearch.com, upickstorage.com and Storitz.com are often more than happy to do whatever comparison shopping you may need done before making a decision, but will also sign tenants up before they get to the actual self storage facility in person.

“…The self storage industry is still in its infancy when it comes to the Internet…we had trouble explaining to people that their facilities needed to be found on the Internet. People now take being found on the Internet as a given—the difference is where and to what extent?” said Mike Jones of USstoragesearch.com.

As the World Wide Web continues to become a larger and larger piece of the business world, the uses for which it can be used will only continue to grow. Social media has already opened a completely new avenue for marketing and advertisers to find and entice customers. Many self storage companies, as well as other industries, use the internet as educational tools, foregoing the traditional classroom.

With sites like these for the self storage industry growing in popularity, helping us find exactly what we want without leaving the house or doing extensive research, the possibilities for the world wide web, self storage, and you become endless.
