No one likes to be in the dark literally (unless you’re going to sleep or playing hide and seek) or figuratively. In the literal sense, shedding a little light is a great way for companies in the self storage industry to save a little money. The great thing is that it can be done without leaving your customers in the dark.
The rage these days in the business world is all about cutting costs without cutting the quality of the product that customers are getting, in this case a safe, well-illuminated space for individuals to store personal property. One self-storage facility has found a way to do that and cut their energy usage by 87 percent.
The Tempe Storage Company, a self storage company in Tempe, Arizona, has switched over to energy efficient LED lighting that they got through Relumination, LLC, a LED lighting solutions company and a member of the Arizona Self Storage Association
"We want to provide our community a safe, secure place to store their personal and business valuables and better lighting helps us deliver upon our customer satisfaction promise," said Terry Blakemore, owner of Tempe Storage Company.
Not only does the new exterior LED lighting save the relatively new self storage company money, it also provides tenants with better lighting at night. Ground lighting has improved by about 20 percent on average. This of course makes tenants feel safer when they come to the facility at night, which in turn affects the bottom line through customer retention and increased referrals.
"We are able to pass along our reduced energy savings to our customers by keeping our monthly rental prices very competitive, especially considering we are Tempe's newest storage facility," said Blakemore.
Energy efficient lighting is a boon to the bottom line of self storage companies like Tempe Storage in so many ways. Not only will they save close to $4,000 in the next year on lower energy bills and reduced maintenance needs, but the costs are also a tax deduction. A complete return on the investment is expected within 2 ½ years for lighting that is expected to last 12 years.
