Ask any one that regularly donates time to different charities and they will tell you that there is nothing that beats the feeling that you get when you see someone put on a warm coat for the first time in months or when kids get new toys to play with. It’s that feeling that often gets people to return to the program they are helping and continue doing so.
It sounds like that could be the case for the good people that work at San Diego Self Storage. The nearly 40-year old company recently completed a month long charity drive that saw all 16 self storage facilities pitching in.
Starting back on June 1, they began to take collections for an organization called Homefront San Diego, a non-for-profit agency that helps the families of members of the military in the San Diego area. Too often, military families end up doing without. This organization was formed to try and provide them with things like clothing, furniture, appliances, groceries, baby items, and gas cards.
Throughout the month of June all 16 facilities collected donations. In the end, they had enough items to fill five large storage units. Steven Teixeira, the director of property management for San Diego Self Storage, had this to say:
"We’re very pleased with the response from the public and our facility tenants who really came through with useful donations that will help these military families with much-needed items. This drive supplements our discount rental program that we offer enlisted servicemen and women and due to the positive response, we hope to make this an annual signature event, much like our annual Toys for Tots toy collection during the holiday season.”
Giving back to the men and women of the armed forces and their families is not exactly a new idea. Many companies offer discounts on an ongoing basis for members of the armed forces. Another San Diego-based self storage facility, Big Box Storage Company, gave tickets to the home opener (April 5) between the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants to tenants that serve in the military.
A cynical person could try to claim that these acts are not out of the goodness of their hearts and a desire to give back to the military. After all, the ticket giveaway and the charity drive serve as great publicity for the respective self storage companies. Why the deeds are being done is not what is important. What is important is that people that deserve a helping hand or a pat on the back in the form of baseball tickets are getting just that.
