Continuing Education through Webinars

As children we are always told that the key to a successful future is getting a good education. What we find out as we get older is that is only partly true. A good education will help you get your foot in the door. The key to a successful future is continuing education.

That is especially true in businesses like the self storage industry where the legal landscape has undergone a number of significant changes of late. Annual conventions often provide owners with the opportunity to learn about the latest changes and trends that affect the self storage industry, but with they tend to come just once a year. You might be able to go to two if you can travel to the national one and state association one.

Thanks to modern technology self storage owners around the country are able to get the continuing education they need through online lectures called webinars.

The North Carolina Self Storage Association has an important one coming up on August 31 at 2 PM EST. The topic for discussion will be one of great importance in the self storage industry these days lien laws and the auction process. North Carolina, like many states, recently altered the existing statute.

Craig Robertson, the director of storage operations for Morningstar Properties, LLC, will be giving the webinar titled “Understanding the North Carolina Lien Law and Auction Process.” Some of the topics that he will be discussing will include:

•    The North Carolina Self Storage Facilities Act
•    Changes made to the North Carolina lien law in 2009
•    Preliminary and lien sale notices
•    Alternatives to having a lien sale
•    Common mistakes

Along with educating owners on the latest legal changes that affect the self storage industry, webinars are often used to educate and inform viewers on different management techniques, operational tips, and much more.

Anne Ballard, president of Universal Management Co., is giving a webinar series on how to make some overall improvements in how your self storage facility operates called “Stepping Up Your Game.” They are scheduled for September 21 and October 27 (the first one was on August 11) at 2 PM EST.

In the webinar series she will be discussing topics on business basics like onsite greetings, telephone goals, and avoiding the discounting trap; marketing topics such as cold calls, onsite events, and community support; and optimizing operations though things like performance indicators, improving cash flow, and scheduling tasks.
