Top Ten Reasons to be Thankful for the Self Storage Industry

by Holly Robinson November 8, 2011 5:50 PM

With Thanksgiving right around the corner (and David Letterman on Monday through Friday) it is easy to do a couple different things: 1) find reason to be thankful for the self storage industry and 2) come up with a top ten list made up of some of those reasons.

Now some people might think, “Well, I don’t use any self storage facility so I have no reason to be thankful for them!”

Oh ye of little faith; everyone has a reason to be thankful for the self storage industry—they just might not know it yet. Here are the top ten reasons why you should be thankful for the self storage industry:

10. The self storage industry is proof that a business can succeed in tough economic times. In 2010 the self storage industry had over $20 billion in revenue in the United States (not too shabby).

9. Because you can never have too many reality shows like Storage Wars and Auction Hunters!

8. Many small businesses have found it easier to get started by using a self storage facility to store product, records, etc. rather than rent/buy a larger storefront.

7. If you want it, it’s there. There is a self storage facility in 83.9 percent of all counties in the United States; there is 19.2 square feet per every household in the U.S. and seven square feet per every man, woman, and child.

6. You can help a kid keep warm and meet an NFL cheerleader at them sometimes; like last November when Morada’s Self Storage held a “Coats for Kids” drive that was attended by some of the Oakland Raiders cheerleaders.

5. They make it really easy to donate to “Toys for Tots” since many self storage facilities are involved with the drive every year.

4. They are a great medium and set for television shows and major motion pictures.

3. The industry is truly one about the everyday man. Five companies own roughly 10 percent of the close to 50,000 self storage facilities in the United States. Over 30,000 companies operate the other 45,000 facilities with roughly 27,000 of them owning just one.

2. If there is a charity that needs help, there is probably a self storage facility that wants to help it.

And the No. 1 reason why we should all be thankful for the self storage industry is—

Just because you move into a smaller home does not mean you have to get rid of anything (just rent a self storage unit)!
