Self Storage Company Trying to Give Animals a Helping Hand

by John Stevens November 15, 2011 11:25 AM

Around this time of year it is common to see many companies, self storage and otherwise, get involved in a number of charitable activities. With the holiday season fast approaching more and more people are prone to thinking about those less fortunate, and many will act upon it. However, people are not the only ones that need a helping hand.

LifeStorage, a self storage facility in the Chicago-area, will be holding a pet-adoption event at their facility in Bridgeview, Illinois, on November 19. From 10 AM to 3 PM that Saturday they will have different areas set up where people interested in adopting a pet can interact with the animal before deciding to take him or her home.

“It really just started as two pet owners here in the office talking and it took on a life of its own from there,” Jeffrey Helms, one of the store managers said. “We’ve reached out to different agencies and the reception has been positive.”

LifeStorage will also have stations set up for people to donate pet supplies as well. Folks that are just interested in helping but can’t adopt a pet can donate to help future foster pets as well.

So far LifeStorage has three agencies set to attend Pet-A-Palooza Saturday, The People’s Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.) of Tinley Park, Forever Friends Great Dane Rescue (FFGDR), and Forest South Animal Hospital.

“Our thoughts and goals on this is to hopefully to get as many pets adopted out to families and to possibly acquire new tenants either at our location or possibly one that is closer to where they might live. The event is two-fold, but as a pet lover, it’s hard not to focus on the animals involved. I do not have any kids, so to me, my doggies are my children. They require the same attention and love. My dogs go everywhere with me,” Nancy Warrer, another of the LifeStorage managers said.

There are about 75 million pet dogs and another 85 million pet cats in the United States. There are about another 5-7 million that call one of the approximately 5,000 animal shelters home.  Of those animals, about 3-4 million of them end up being euthanized; roughly 60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats.

“…They are true friends, providing companionship and unconditional love. Finding them good homes is such an important goal of ours.”
