Back in the 1950s there was a strange craze that swept college campuses across the country—seeing how many people could be stuffed into a telephone booth. Supposedly the craze started in South Africa with a record 25 students crammed into a booth. Some of the brightest minds in the United States tried to best that mark but were never able to.
Half a century later the idea in question—how much of something you can stuff into something— still grasps the attention of the general public. While the “phone booth” craze did little other than waste the time of students, it would not be a bad thing if more self storage facilities were to try and best a mark recently set by a StorageMart facility recently.
StorageMart decided to kill two proverbial birds with one proverbial stone with a rather special project. They wanted to give people an answer when they asked how much stuff they can fit into a particular self storage unit and give back to the community at the same time.
Stuff is such a general term so the good people at StorageMart opted to see how much Thanksgiving dinner they could fit into a 5X5 storage unit. When all was said and done they decided to donate however much turkey dinner that could fit to The Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri.
As it turns out, you can fit a lot into a 5X5 storage unit. The following is a list of what StorageMart got into the unit and then donated:
192 cans of Del Monte corn, 120 cans of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce, 24 family-size boxes of Minute rice, 384 bottles of Nestle Pure Life water, 63 pounds of russet potatoes, 14 family-size boxes of Betty Crocker sweet potato casserole, 216 bags of Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix, 192 cans of Swanson chicken broth.
When all was said and done, they had managed to fit over 1,500 pounds of food and water into a 5X5 self storage unit (and even made a video about the journey)!
Charitable endeavors like this are nothing new to StorageMart. Last September they offered up self storage units to victims of the wild fires in Texas at a heavily discounted rate ($3 for three months).
“In situations like these we are more than happy to do what we can to help those people being affected,” said Sarah Little, StorageMart Interactive Marketing Director. “When someone’s home has been lost or damaged or is being threatened, a self storage company is in a unique position to lend a hand. We find the opportunity to provide that assistance rewarding.”
