The leading portable storage company in San Diego, Big Box Storage, Inc., joined forces with Planet Aid in an effort to provide sustainable development in underprivileged communities around the world. Big Box Storage will help collect clothing and shoes and give them to Planet Aid.
"We're asking San Diego residents to remember Planet Aid on occasions when they have articles of clothing or shoes available for donation," said Rita Hurley of Big Box Storage in San Diego, CA. "We're pleased to be able to assist them with their ongoing humanitarian and environmental efforts."
Big Box Storage is placing a bin at their facility at 7077 Consolidated Way, San Diego. Storage renters and the general public can place clothing in the bin. Donated items will be resold to raise money for development projects in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Projects include providing food, health programs, HIV/AID prevention, teacher training, small-scale farming, vocational training, and manager in training.
If placement of the bin is successful, Big Box Storage will place more bins at some of their other storage facilities. This is a win/win situation for all involved. People in the community will get extra space in their home when they clean out their closets and donate unused clothing items. Planet Aid will get items that they can sell and then use the money to support worthwhile projects in developing communities around the world.
Planet Aid protects the environment by reducing the amount of clothing that goes into landfills. They have collected over 160 million pounds of shoes and clothing since 1997. (They estimate that 100 million pounds of clothing would bury 90 football fields 5-feet-deep.) They have donated over $70 million to humanitarian projects around the world.
Established in 2002, Big Box Storage delivers storage containers to customers' homes. The customers pack the container and then Big Box Storage picks it up and keeps it at a secure, centrally-located, climate controlled facility. The central Big Box facilities have advanced anti-theft alarms and motion sensors. Each Big Box is mold and mildew retardant. Renters have access to their storage 7 days a week.
Big Box Storage offers long-distance shipping services. Customers can have their rented Big Box shipped directly to another city and then delivered right to their new doorstep.
