Self Storage Facilities Know What to Do When it Comes to Giving

by John Stevens December 19, 2011 8:31 PM

It is common for people to feel like donating to charity during the holiday season. Many businesses including your local self storage facility tend to get involved with helping a charity of some kind during the holiday season as a collective way to give back to the community and help those who are down on their luck. With so many worthwhile charities in existence it is hard not to find one willing to accept aid.

However, the problem is not typically in finding a charity looking for help or even a business (self storage facility or otherwise) or people willing to donate. The problem can be whether those willing to donate have what is being asked for. It might seem a little silly, but there are folks that want to donate that just might not have a lot of clothes, toys, or even perishable food to donate.

Yes, people could just go buy new clothes, toys, or food to donate, but the problem there is people could buy things that are not really necessary or some—although willing to donate—might not want to go through as much in order to donate.

There is an easy solution to that which a pair of self storage facilities recently used. There is no such thing as a bad donation, but to make sure that the charities on the receiving end are able to meet their exact needs there is nothing wrong with donating money. It may be impersonal and the easiest thing to do, but it is also the one thing that just about any charity will say it does not have enough of.

Reliable Storage in Port Orchard, Washington, recently opened its seventh facility on December 15. To celebrate the event they donated $500 to the South Kitsap Food Bank, an organization that helps feed around 3,600 people a month.

Another self storage facility, this one in North Fort Meyers, Florida, has taken a similar stance in its charity efforts this holiday season. Spacebox Storage USA recently announced that they were donating over 200 new toys to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots campaign.

The self storage company collected money through various fund raising efforts in November, $1000, to make the purchases for Toys for Tots.

Isn’t that a little impersonal to just give money? Doesn’t it mean more if I give of myself; my own personal belongings?

Donations or personal possessions are fine, but so are monetary ones. That way charities are able to make up for deficiencies in certain things by going to the store themselves.
