During the holidays months it is not uncommon for many people to give to charity. Around thanksgiving and Christmas it is just natural for people to want to give to those that are less fortunate. The only problem is that they are less fortunate all year-round, not just during the holidays.
The self storage industry takes a very active role when it comes to helping charities during the holidays, but for most of them it is really a year-round way of life and they’ve continued to give back even though the holiday season has ended.
Champion Self Storage has their next charitable endeavor scheduled for January 21. What was originally scheduled to be a yard sale has now become a health fair with people getting the opportunity to give blood, receive advice from fitness professionals, have their kids fingerprinted by the sheriff’s office, and even get a mammogram on site.
"It started as a yard sale but it quickly blossomed," said Lindy Lord-Cooper, manager of Champion Self Storage in Cape Corals, Florida.
All proceeds from the yard sale will go to help From Our Hearts, a non-for-profit agency that helps women pay for mammograms and breast cancer treatments.
"No one should be dependent on financial ability because the disease is curable," said Karen Washburn, a board member for From Our Hearts.
It’s not just self storage facilities that make a practice of giving back to the community. Schur Success Auction & Appraisal, a company that works as the auctioneer at over 100 self storage facilities in Colorado, has spent the last couple months raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
“Many of our bidders and buyers served in our military. We felt it appropriate to kick off our charitable campaign by raising funds for the Wounded Warriors,” Shannon Schur, CEO and President of the company, said, “…and our wonderful bidders started handing us cash”.
The Wounded Warrior Project’s purpose is to raise awareness of the needs of injured servicemen and women as well as to provide them with programs to help them meet their needs.
The company had said that it would donate a portion of the proceeds from each sale to the cause, but over half of the $2,800 that was raised came in the form of donations from bidders at different auctions. The success of the program has prompted the company to keep the program going.
“We’ll announce a new recipient in January” said Schur.
