When it comes to talk concerning wars and the self storage industry people are more likely to start asking questions about who made the best buy on the latest episode of Storage Wars or Auction Hunters. The self storage industry happens to be heavily involved with those who fight in real conflicts, the men and women that serve in the Armed Forces.
A number of self storage facilities have held different fundraisers geared towards helping members of the military and their families. For example, Mesquite Self Storage in Las Vegas, Nevada is scheduled to hold a garage sale this weekend with proceeds going to aid the local veteran’s center.
This is nothing new for the good people at Mesquite Self Storage. They held another garage sale in June 2010 to benefit the local veteran’s center as well. The proceeds from that sale went towards helping build an actual building for the center to be located in. Even without a physical over $1.5 million in compensation had already been obtained for local veterans.
“We are seeing a lot of the same issues in our young men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and that is why we have pushed so hard for the Mesquite Veterans Center…,” said Vietnam veteran Al Litman.
Mesquite Self Storage is not the only self storage facility to give back to those in the military. Edna Quintana, the manager at Community Self Storage in Cape Corral, Florida, hosted a yard sale last May in order to raise funds for the Americas Veterans Foundation.
"I was raised in the military. My dad served in the Army for 27 years. Consequently, vets are near and dear to my heart, so I'm very excited to invite everyone to come enjoy the fun, festivities and yard sale treasures on this special day!" she said prior to the event.
Rabco Corporation’s CEO, Ron Raboud, has been busy working with many members of the self storage community in order to help veterans through his charity, the Wounded Warriors Outdoors. Through the organization, Raboud is able to take wounded veterans on hunting and fishing trips that might otherwise not be able to do so on their own.
“My motivation to found and pursue this organization is two-fold. I want to honor our wounded military veterans as well as the memories of my parents. My dad was a wounded World War II veteran. I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor them both,” Raboud says.
