The age of the internet has opened up a whole host of marketing methods to businesses of all sorts. Many of the forms of advertising becoming popular via the internet often do not cost companies even close to the amount they spend on more traditional forms of advertising, i.e. print, radio, and television. If they happen to take off, great; if they don’t than it’s no great loss.
One such method that has become popular in recent years is the creation of videos that can be posted to places like YouTube. Should the video be one that catches the public eye and goes viral (meaning thousands if not millions of people watch it) you’re talking great exposure for one’s business for relatively little money.
When it comes to a business like the self storage industry where everyone offers relatively the same product, a good promotion can be the key to a higher occupancy. Many companies in the self storage industry have taken to the web to promote their facility. One company has gone as far as to set up their own channel on YouTube.
StorageMart has been producing videos for YouTube in an effort to find out how much of certain things can fit in a self storage unit. So far they’ve discovered how much Thanksgiving Dinner can fit, and more recently discovered how much bubble bath could fit in a self storage unit.
Their most recent set of videos are in honor of Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (yes, it actually exists) which is the last Monday of January each year. The product is something that is seen fairly often in the self storage industry as a tool used in packing delicate, breakable objects. However, it is also used as a child’s toy and as a method of stress relief.
This time the creative minds in charge of the project decided to do something a little different. Rather than see how much bubble wrap could fit in a self storage unit (which is probably difficult since so many bubbles would keep popping as you add more), they opted to see how well protected an egg surrounded by bubble wrap would be.
After rigorous testing it was found that bubble wrap could protect a fragile egg from heights of at least 20 feet. The actually testing can be viewed in their short videos that have been posted to the StorageMart Media YouTube channel in such sure-fire classics as “Favorite Ways to Pop,” “Egg Drop,” and “Egg Drop 2: Eggbert’s Revenge.”
The first in the egg-related series only has around 150 views so far, but early efforts like the Thanksgiving video have close to 8,000 views; the Bubble Bath one has over 4,600 views.
