Vehicle Storage Tips

Since our facilities offer car storage and truck storage on a month-to-month rental basis, you can easily store a car just for a season, during an extended period of travel, or indefinitely if you just need more space in your garage or driveway.

Whether you're looking for more security than your garage or driveway at home can offer, or you need additional space to store a company car or delivery van, a safe, secure vehicle storage facility can provide a great solution for vehicle storage needs. The following tips should help you find the right storage space for your vehicle!

  • Long term vehicle storage facilities offer both indoor vehicle storage and outdoor vehicle storage. Depending on the vehicle and how much protection you want it to have from the elements, you may want to consider a paved or gravel outdoor space or covered outdoor space. These spaces are more affordable than indoor storage spaces, but do not offer as much security.
  • A drive-up garage space will usually be moderate in cost but will offer protection from the weather and better security so that you can have more peace of mind.
  • The most secure option for a vehicle is a drive up interior space. While these spaces are the most expensive, they offer a climate-controlled environment, ideal for vintage and customized cars that need to be babied and cared for gently.
  • Be sure to check the dimensions of a potential storage unit, including the width of the door, especially if you plan to use the unit for trailer storage. Consider the size of any equipment you wish to store with the vehicle, such as a trailer or any additional equipment or supplies.
  • In addition, consider how frequently you plan to use stored vehicles. If you plan on frequent use of vehicles such as moving trucks, construction trucks or delivery vans, you may wish to choose a unit close to the facility entrance that will allow you to travel in and out with ease.
  • Vehicles must have current license plates. If your tags expire while in storage, your storage facility may ask you to renew them.
  • Storage facilities typically require proof of vehicle registration. They may also require proof of insurance, since individual property is not covered by the facility's insurance.
  • Stored vehicles must be road-worthy. Keep an eye on tires that can dry rot or deflate.
  • Most facilities expect that repairing or extensive maintenance of vehicles will be done elsewhere.
  • When vehicles will be stored indoors over long periods of time, check fuel lines and gaskets, and lay down cardboard or mats to prevent damage to the unit's floor.
  • Ask your self storage facility manager for advice about other factors you may need to keep in mind when storing your vehicle.
