I thought I was getting a fair deal on large spaces, although they have no climate control. I left my old storage units to have closer proximity to my new home and to try to save some money on storage. Once I was there for several months, my rent was doubled on one of my units without notice; they claim they sent me something by mail, however even though I have postal forwarding, I never received it. So all of a sudden I was charged nearly double (auto pay) what I had been charged—from $139, to now over $220. When I questioned this, the very nice office gals told me that Extra Space Storage does a routine analysis of “market cost”, for similar storage units using a radius of five or 10 miles, and then they adjust their prices—apparently whenever they would like. The gal in the office agreed to put in a request to have the cost of my space lowered, but it was very quickly declined by corporate. Now, I am scrambling to try to get out of two of my units so that this doesn’t happen with those as well. I have been with Diamond Storage for years and have never had something like this happen. The rate that I am quoted is the rate it has continued to be. I’m considering moving all of my stuff back there, even though it is not conveniently located. What Extra Space does with their pricing just does not seem ethical. Great customer service from the office staff but horrible company practices. Lastly, there is a huge pothole outside the gate that you can’t avoid hitting each time you leave. It was great when it was Lyons, but since extra storage, it has been HORRIBLE!! I ended up moving out after getting a notice that they were jumping my rent from $130 to $191. When I called and talked with Claire, she stated that they were overcharging me. She lowered it to $167. I then got another notice saying it was going up again to $191. I ended up moving to a place that has better security, it a local place, and they actually care about their renters! I don't advise anyone to rent with Extra Storage!
