Extra Space Storage CEO Joe Margolis Named Among Glassdoor Top CEOs 2019

Joe Margolis, Chief Executive Officer at Extra Space Storage, has been named among the Top CEOs 2019 on Glassdoor, one the world’s largest job and recruiting websites. Glassdoor released its annual list highlighting the Top CEOs in several countries throughout North America and Europe. Margolis ranks number 57 out of 100 on the U.S. list with a 94% approval rating from employees.

Margolis has been the CEO at Extra Space Storage since 2017 and has 14 years of experience with the self storage company. He demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the core values that define the company’s culture, which has helped create a workplace focused on excellence, innovation, and teamwork.

“When I first started working with Extra Space Storage, we had 12 properties,” Margolis said. “I’ve enjoyed watching it grow to 1,700 properties and become an S&P 500 company with over a billion dollars in yearly revenue. We’ve had amazing growth, but through it all, the company has had the same values it did when we were a small company with 12 stores: Integrity, Excellence, Innovation, Teamwork, and Passion.”

Extra Space Storage—which was recently named one of America’s Best Midsize Employers in 2019 by Forbes—is consistently looking for ways to innovate and break the mold while making a difference on a large scale. Through sustainability efforts and diversity initiatives, a dedication to work-life balance, and a focus on professional development and growth for employees, Extra Space Storage strives to provide an excellent work environment for each and every team member.

“I am honored to know that the employees of Extra Space Storage trust me and the direction of our company,” Margolis continued. “With nearly 4,000 employees operating in 40 states, I don’t have the opportunity to work alongside everyone personally every day, so I believe this award is a reflection of our employees’ support and approval of the company culture and trajectory, and not necessarily of me individually. I’m grateful to be part of a deeply talented team who make Extra Space Storage such a great place to work.”

When employees submit company reviews on Glassdoor, they’re asked to rate various factors about their employment experience. As part of these ratings, employees are also asked to rate their CEO. Among the approximately 900,000 companies reviewed on Glassdoor, the average CEO approval rating is below 70%, so it’s notable that Margolis has a 94% rating with nearly 400 reviews.

“It’s a privilege to recognize incredible leaders who, from their employees’ perspectives, exemplify exceptional vision, trust, and communication,” said Christian Sutherland-Wong, Glassdoor President and Chief Operating Officer. “Today’s job seekers are looking for leaders who share their values and will empower them to bring their full selves to work.”

CEO approval ratings are collected through Glassdoor’s online company review survey, which gathers current and former employee sentiments about job and company satisfaction, the work environment, and the culture. Employees are asked to rate a number of workplace factors like compensation and benefits, as well as work-life balance and whether they approve, disapprove, or are neutral regarding their CEO. In addition, employees are asked to describe some of the upsides and downsides of working for the company and provide any advice for senior management.
