17 Ideas for Designing a Feng Shui Bathroom

Bathrooms can be some of the trickiest rooms for directing and harnessing positive chi. While the amount of drains and running water in a bathroom are great for getting you clean and helping flush away bad energy, the overpowering influence of water means you run the risk of flushing away good energy, too. Fortunately, these feng shui bathroom tips can counter the downward flow!

Determine Bagua Location

If you’re building a brand new home or adding another bathroom onto your home, pick an ideal feng shui bathroom location to generate the most positive chi.

“The bathroom is considered to be a ‘dirty’ part of the house, and therefore should not be positioned near a kitchen, in a bedroom, or by the front door,” said Ashley Peacock, a classical feng shui consultant and creator of Peacock Feng Shui.

While you would ideally have a home where bathrooms are not in the wealth, health, and relationship centers, there are easy fixes if they are. From utilizing earth element decor in the southwest to adding wood elements to prevent wealth from getting washed away in the southeast, there are plenty of feng shui fixes for any issue you may encounter.

Scrub Surfaces Often

If there’s any part of your home to keep sparkling clean, it’s your bathroom. Balance the dirty energy of your bathroom by highlighting the cleaning energy of this space. You can enhance bathroom feng shui by sticking to a regular scrubbing schedule with toilets, showers, tubs, sinks, and countertops.

Keep the Bathroom Door Shut

A feng shui bathroom door is a closed bathroom door! Shutting the bathroom door and putting the toilet seat down are two of the golden rules of feng shui, according to Ivy Marie Lim, a realtor and feng shui consultant. Making sure these are closed will stop positive energy from getting washed away. Some feng shui experts also suggest plugging your drains when they’re not in use.

Clear Counters & Closets

Bathroom counters and linen closets often get cluttered with excess products and tools. Only having what you need in this space is a bathroom feng shui rule that will help your mornings (as well as your life) seem less cluttered.

“Get rid of anything broken or old,” Lim advised. “Trust that you can get rid of it, and you will always have the things you need.”

Lim adds that being able to quickly locate what you need when you need it will prevent you from starting or ending your day frustrated. Need some decluttering inspiration? Try these DIY bathroom storage and organization ideas!

Emphasize the Wood Element

Of the five elements of feng shui, wood is one of the best to include in the bathroom! Because this element is nurtured by water, its positive properties are highlighted by the immense amount of water flowing here. Wooden counters, picture frames, and bathtub trays (You can even make a tray with reclaimed wood) are all simple ways to keep good vibes abundant in this room.

Utilize the Earth Element

Because the feng shui earth element destroys water, it’s great to include in bathroom decor. Simply integrate this element with marble sinks or quartz countertops. You can also help nourish relationships, health, and knowledge by painting the room in a comforting yellow or by adding orange and pink accents.

Downplay the Water Element

There’s no way to avoid water in your bathroom, and you wouldn’t want to because it’s useful for washing away impurities and bad energies. But Lim warns it can wash away good chi as well. Avoid anything blue and black in general, but especially when it comes to choosing paint or tile.

“Keep colors light and neutral,” Lim suggested, saying light colors prevent more rushing energy in the room. In addition, anything that has a wavy shape should be avoided, as it further invokes the water element.

Limit the Fire Element

Fire and water are two elements that don’t go well together. Because water extinguishes fires—and there’s so much water present in the bathroom—too much of the fire element can negatively affect the energy. While candles and warm lighting are okay for feng shui decorating, limiting the use of reds, oranges, and triangular-shaped decor is a great way to cultivate a relaxing environment.

Keep Metals to a Minimum

Because metal is conductive to water, another important feng shui tip for the bathroom is to reduce metallic decor. Hardware and current design trends make it hard to avoid all metal in the bathroom. It’s especially difficult with modern sinks and mirrors being circular, which is the shape associated with the metal element. If you find yourself drawn to metal-enhancing decor, balance this dynamic element with straight lines and wood or earth-inspired furniture.

Create a Spa-Like Feel

Whether you have large master bathroom or small half-bath, creating a calm and luxurious atmosphere is a great way to bring positive chi into a bathroom.

“I personally like to create a spa-like environment in the bathroom with plants, candles, and natural/non-toxic textiles,” Peacock shared. “Having the elements balanced in the space feels good. Natural materials and serene colors create a relaxing environment.”

Design with Vertical Lines

Because the draining and flushing elements of your bathroom generate a lot of downward energy, you’ll want to find ways to redirect some chi upward! One easy way to do this is with upward lines. Decorate with orchids, choose wallpaper with vertical lines, and opt for wall decor that creates the feeling of going up to make a feng shui bathroom.

When it comes to feng shui colors, pink is an awesome option for creating grounding spaces! Including this soft color in your floor tile, sink, or backsplash is a great way to bring the calming energy of the earth element to what can be a hectic space.

Invest in a Wooden Vanity

Adding a wood vanity is a great feng shui furniture option for any bathroom. Because water enhances the wood element, decorating with wood assists in keeping positive chi flowing in your restroom. Wooden furniture also generates positive energy around your family and the wealth areas of your life.

Add a Wooden Towel Rack

Already have counters or a vanity installed? Bring the feng shui wood element into your bathroom with a DIY rustic towel rack. Not only does this look great and generate good chi, but it also helps minimize clutter and allows you to easily grab a towel when needed.

Decorate with Bamboo

Looking to incorporate the best feng shui bathroom plants? Add bamboo! Stalks of bamboo are believed to be lucky and help purify the air. Not to mention, this plant naturally creates vertical lines, which is an excellent way to generate upward energy in a bathroom.

Be Strategic with Bathroom Art

The feng shui bathroom rules on wall decor recommend keeping photos of your loved ones and family out because of the overall uncleanly nature of the bathroom. According to Lim, ideal feng shui art for a bathroom centers around light and airy visuals. Think photos of birds, paintings of the sky, or any abstract images with vertical lines.

Examine Your Own Energy

If your bathroom is located in an unlucky spot or a small home is making it hard to obtain your perfect feng shui layout, don’t lose hope!

“The biggest energy body in your house is you,” Lim said. “Don’t ever disregard your own energy and energetic resonance.”

While you may not have the luxury to redesign your home or the ability to move, Lim recommends you don’t downplay the importance of designing a room that feels good to you. The positive energy will follow.
