Announcing EXTRAordinary Employee of the Quarter Winners for Q1 2022

At Extra Space Storage, we believe our greatest asset is our employees. From the people who work in our National Sales Center to the managers operating our self storage facilities across the nation, the team behind Extra Space Storage is what makes our company better every single day.

Each quarter, we give out the EXTRAordinary Employee of the Quarter award. These aren’t given to people who just do their jobs. They’re awarded to those who go above and beyond in demonstrating our core values, and the nominations are submitted anonymously by other employees, team leaders, or entire departments.

Below are the EXTRAordinary winners from Q1 2022, featuring the nomination statements from their peers!

Herb Dierking – District Manager

“Since day one, Herb Dierking has always shown a genuine interest in my career and well-being. He consistently reaches out to simply check in and see how I am doing or if there is anything he can help with. Herb frequently invites me to participate in events, situations, or tasks pertaining to the business that, based on my tenure, I may not have experienced before. This has provided me with many new learning opportunities, which has helped better set me up for success. Additionally, to support me and operate his district, he facilitated the Guiding People to Success (GPS) training in Q1 of 2022 and assisted in facilitating our Spring Divisional Meeting. After a promotion, he volunteered to take on additional sites as a part of his own district. Herb is such an amazing partner and team player. He always looks beyond the immediate needs of his own district, seeking out what is best for the division and our organization. Herb makes Extra Space a great place to work!”

Ciro Vigilante – Senior District Manager

“Ciro is the epitome of the silent hero. Since becoming the Senior District Manager, he has done nothing but support his peers, asking nothing in return. He has been invaluable to developing our internal talent by running training classes which produced two Division Learning Managers and one District Manager in Training last year. He is incredibly giving of his time, never failing to answer the phone or step up to help a peer. He has mentored several District Managers and continues to reach out to them. But what really pushes Ciro to the top is how humble he is and how he never asks for anything in return.”

Bianca Nazario – District Manager

“Bianca joined Extra Space Storage at the start of 2021. She has successfully navigated rough seas while having a vision of growth and a positive mindset. In a nutshell, Bianca was handed a new industry to learn, a district recuperating from leadership changes, and 15 sites to oversee amidst a global pandemic. In the last year, she has successfully rebuilt our team by acquiring new managers and developing existing members to new heights. What resonates with us the most is the fact that Bianca has a special way of making each of us feel like a valuable part of the team’s success. There’s not one member of this district that is not special in some way, and she makes it a priority to highlight each of our competencies. We look forward to taking this team to another level. Thanks for leading the way, Bianca!”

Kelley Lytle – Learning & Content Specialist, National Sales Center

“Kelley was my trainer, and she is amazing. I have had other work-from-home jobs that required me to go through training, which is always the worst part. There’s always too much information packed into a short timeframe, which can be boring and awkward, but not Kelley’s class. Kelley made us all feel so comfortable with each other that we just became a little family. She made the information easy to obtain and just made training fun. She took the information and conveyed it in her own way. The training didn’t feel exhausting or overwhelming, and she made me genuinely excited to start taking calls. Kelley is an amazing trainer all around, and I truly enjoyed her training class. I’ll miss fur baby Fridays, Kahoots, and all of our inside class jokes (I can’t forget to mention she’s hilarious). Best of all, she still supports us and checks in to this day.”

Nathan Taylor – Regional Training Manager

“To say that Nathan lives and breathes our core values would be an understatement. Nathan exudes excellence in all that he does. Whether it’s helping his District Managers to become better coaches, presenting on a conference call or at a divisional meeting, or teaching a District Team Lead or Manager any number of topics during a store visit. Nathan’s passion for the job is infectious, and he is someone who I look forward to having any interaction with regardless of the platform. Nathan’s integrity follows suit; he is not afraid to say that he doesn’t know the answer to a question, but he will always find one or be innovative in solving any problem or challenge when presented to him. And lastly, and most importantly, Nathan is a true teammate. Nathan is available to his District Manager team whenever called upon and is nothing short of an incredible partner. Nathan was instrumental in assisting me with developing one of my District Team Leads, who was ultimately promoted to District Manager in Training, something I don’t know I could have accomplished without his knowledge, expertise, and teamwork. I am truly grateful for all Nathan does for my division and team, and I am proud to call him EXTRAordinary. Thank you for everything, Nathan!”

Bill Mottram – Transitions Director, Store Support Center

“A good leader is someone you can count on at any time, who doesn’t hesitate to answer all your questions or find a solution to a problem, someone who is willing to listen, and someone you can trust. If you want to see a good example of what it looks like to be on a team where your leader motivates you, look out for Bill. He is one of a kind, truly cares for his team and colleagues, and is someone you can count on. He started in the company as a District Manager, became a Senior District Manager, then a Senior Transitions Manager, and now Transitions Director. His accomplishments speak for themselves, and he deserves to be nominated for this award. Good Job, Bill, in everything you do!”

Armand Hoxha – Data Scientist Associate, Store Support Center

“Armand joined us less than a year ago and has quickly become one of Data Science’s most promising talents. He has been critical in rebuilding our pricing system on the cloud. His passion for learning and finding solutions has led to cutting down process runtimes from a few hours to a few minutes. This has provided a measurable value to our technology decisions as well. He has punched above his role continuously throughout the quarter by helping design a better testing process, educating others on leveraging cloud capabilities, building amazing dashboards that explain our price recommendations, and much more. He’s done all this while cutting through an issues backlog like a racecar doing laps. He maintains a good attitude and is always willing to help others.”
