Extra Space Storage Employees Share Lunar New Year Traditions

People around the world are celebrating a new year. Beginning February 1st and lasting 15 days, Lunar New Year is an important holiday that marks the beginning of a calendar year that bases its months on moon cycles. Dating back as early as the 14th century B.C., Lunar New Year is a time to pray for a good planting and harvest, honor elders, and set intentions of good luck and fortune for the year to come.

This year, we asked two Extra Space Storage team members to share their experiences celebrating Lunar New Year and what it means to them.

Brian Kim, District Manager

A fun occasion for our family that we look forward to celebrating together each year is the Chinese New Year. The tradition for us is to make sure we get to spend time with each other and pay respect to the elders and younger generations through giving and receiving money in red envelopes. The celebration of coming together for the start of Lunar New Year is in hopes of bringing good fortune for each member of the family.

Anastasia Krecklow, Store Manager

The New Year in Ukraine is one of the year’s biggest holidays. We believe that how you celebrate the holiday determines the whole upcoming year. Ukrainians pay close attention to the lunar calendar. We know in advance the symbol of the year to come. The holiday menu, clothes, and presents are all determined by the lunar calendar. People want to please the main character of the New Year and don’t want to upset them. Gifts associated with the zodiac animal are the most traditional gifts at this time of the year.
