Extra Space Storage Partners with The Policy Project to Bring Menstrual Hygiene Products to Utah Schools

Members of the Marketing and Operations Support teams at Extra Space Storage recently volunteered with The Policy Project to help address the pressing issue of period poverty and commemorate International Menstrual Hygiene Day. Through this collaboration, Extra Space Storage donated and constructed 300 boxes, which Policy Project volunteers then utilized to assemble period kits. These kits will be distributed to schools across Utah, ensuring that students in need can access essential menstrual hygiene products.

The Policy Project, led by its president, Emily Bell McCormick, is dedicated to breaking down barriers to opportunity and fostering positive change through solution-based policies. The Policy Project aims to create healthy and equitable policies for bettering our children, communities, and the world by working at all levels of society, including government, businesses, families, and individuals.

“Our Utah communities are looking for a way to lift each other, to spend energy and time doing something for the good of others,” McCormick said. “And one need that has become increasingly apparent, that of period poverty, is a solvable problem. We recently gathered to take another step toward ensuring our students have access to period products over the summer, so they can stay at work and at play. Our impact partners, including Extra Space Storage, are critical for the long-term success of community-wide change.”

Thanks to the dedicated work of The Period Project, one of several Policy Project initiatives, House Bill 162 “Period Products in Schools,” unanimously passed by the Utah legislature in March 2022. The bill mandates that all public and charter schools in the state provide period products in girls and unisex restrooms within all school facilities.

A year later, in March 2023, Utah became the first U.S. state to support free period products in all state-owned buildings. Utah Governor Cox, Lieutenant Governor Henderson, and advocates from The Policy Project jointly announced the initiative, signifying another vital advancement in the fight against period poverty within the state.

We can all play a role in ending period poverty by advocating for policies that prioritize menstrual health and supporting organizations, like The Policy Project, dedicated to this cause. Together, we can empower individuals, uplift communities, and create a future where everyone can access the essential products they deserve.

Extra Space Storage is dedicated to making a positive impact on the communities we serve. Learn more about our culture and job opportunities on our careers page.
