In September, Solar Builder announced five contenders for their annual solar Project of the Year, all with the goal of benefiting their respective communities through solar. As part of New Jersey’s Community Solar Energy Pilot Program, Extra Space Storage dedicated the rooftops of ten locations in the state, totaling 800,000 square feet of rooftop space, and committed to sending excess power back to the grid to benefit low- to moderate-income households in the surrounding areas.

“We’re proud to continue to lead the self storage sector in sustainability and this community solar project is a great addition to our solar efforts,” shared McKall Morris, Senior Manager of Corporate Communications and Sustainability at Extra Space Storage. “Community solar enables Extra Space to do good for the environment and for the community in the areas we serve, so we appreciate being recognized by Solar Builder as Community Solar Project of the Year.”

The first completed project of ten Extra Space Storage facilities is located in Neptune, NJ, at 2990 Route 66, generating approximately 500 kilowatts of energy. Additional installations will take place in Egg Harbor Township, Ho-Ho-Kus, Jersey City, Laurence, Parlin, Old Bridge, Iselin, Hazlet, and Toms River. Extra Space will partner with Solar Landscape, New Jersey’s largest community solar owner and operator, to complete the other nine upcoming installations.

Community solar projects like these allow residents to take advantage of discounted energy rates without incurring the cost or trouble of installing solar panels on their own homes. It’s an easy and practical method to lower household electric bills and support local green energy. Residents also do not have to be homeowners to benefit from the discounted rates, as those who rent are eligible to participate in the program as well.

Partnering with commercial buildings to use their rooftops for solar allows the state of New Jersey to preserve greenspace while still providing an opportunity for communities to benefit from renewable and lower-cost energy that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. Extra Space’s Neptune facility is the first of 105 projects approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities last year.

We’re proud to partner with Solar Landscape and the state of New Jersey to continue our commitment to be good stewards of the planet and help people and communities to a better tomorrow.

See how Extra Space Storage is reducing storage facilities’ carbon footprints while still maintaining a strong financial performance!
