Extra Space Storage Adds 360 Units to Seattle, WA Self Storage Facility

Extra Space Storage recently completed an exciting expansion project for a self storage property in Seattle, WA at 1430 N 130th St. This expansion added over 30,000 square feet of rentable space, allowing for 360 new units. The opportunity to add sizable square footage in a growth market like Seattle doesn’t come along often. Leading the project were Program Manager John Bennet, Deal Captain Mackay Reid, and Design Lead Rob Burns.

The unique footprint of this self storage facility meant that the only room for expansion was in front of the office and customer loading areas. Because of this, it seemed nearly impossible to plan for a year of construction while maintaining a positive customer experience.

Excellent communication between the Operations team, Program Manager, and customers was essential during the project. Extra Space Storage Store Manager Misty Schaa-Fernandez and her team did a tremendous job keeping everyone informed and speaking up when conditions at the site were challenging.

Document reviews, permits, and inspections to meet local jurisdiction requirements took an incredible amount of time and effort to schedule as well. The city required on-site stormwater collection, but there wasn’t space at the facility for a retention pond in its existing state. Through collaboration, the project team solved the issue with pervious concrete, bio-retention planters, and underground vaults, which increased capacity to collect stormwater on-site.

Despite many obstacles throughout this self storage expansion—including multiple shutdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic—the project team successfully delivered an impressive new project. Our customers are delighted with this Seattle location’s enhanced parking and semi-covered loading area. The articulated roof projection over the office space also provides greater brand identity and makes it easier for customers to know where to park and transact.

Thank you to the project team, store leadership, and the Extra Space Storage Operations team for making the expansion of 1430 N 130th St in Seattle a success!
