The Lunar New Year is upon us, and communities around the world are preparing to welcome it with open arms. To celebrate this special occasion, we’re delighted to share traditions from two Extra Space employees who bring to light the unique ways in which they and their families celebrate the holiday.

Natalie Lam, Senior Analyst of Investments at Extra Space, holds the Lunar New Year close to her heart, emphasizing its importance in her family’s traditions.

“The day consists of everyone passing around red envelopes to spread good luck and fortune. Typically, the whole family wears red to represent good fortune and success. Family traditions consist of eating vegetarian food, holding a tea ceremony for parents and grandparents, and spending the evening enjoying each other’s company.”

Anastasia Krecklow, a District Team Lead based in Arizona, incorporates the Ukrainian culture into her Lunar New Year celebration.

“Ukrainians pay close attention to the lunar calendar. I think it has something to do with our curiosity and our superstitious nature. Ukrainians have a lot of superstitious beliefs about what actions bring luck to our lives and what actions can scare luck away. We always know the lunar symbols of the upcoming year. Modern Ukrainians believe having an item associated with the Lunar New Year animal will bring good luck to their homes.”

In 2024, the Year of the Dragon has special significance for Anastasia’s family.

“To honor this special year, we each received dragon-themed house slippers and a toy dragon, symbolizing protection and prosperity.”
