Extra Space Storage Donates Masks & Self Storage During COVID-19

As America searches for ways to address the urgent needs of medical professionals and first responders in the COVID-19 pandemic, Extra Space Storage is doing our part by donating masks and providing free storage space to hospitals and those fighting on the front lines during this crisis.

“We talk about our company values often, and it’s times like these where we put those values into practice,” said Gwyn McNeal, Chief Legal Officer and Head of People at Extra Space Storage. “We hope these donations provide some relief to health care professionals in our communities during this time.”

Extra Space Storage employees in hurricane-prone areas of the country realized their storage facility emergency response kits included N95 masks, protection that hospital workers are in great need of to safely treat coronavirus patients. Because of this, Extra Space Storage donated more than 10,000 masks to local hospitals in need.

“One of our guiding principles is to ‘Do the Right Thing,” McNeal added. “This one is clear and simple—we’ll be donating masks, and we’ll restock the hurricane kits when supplies aren’t in high demand.”

In addition to the mask donation, Extra Space Storage is offering two months of free self storage to hospitals, medical professionals, and first responders at our 1,800+ storage facilities nationwide.

“When a hospital in New York City reached out to one of our stores about the cost of renting a unit to potentially store less critical hospital equipment to make room for COVID-19 patients, it was clear we could help,” McNeal explained. “We’re hoping by opening up two months of free storage to first responders, we’ll be helping them mobilize and taking one concern off their plate right now, so they can focus on what matters most—caring for COVID-19 patients.”

In the meantime, Extra Space Storage continues to comply with government recommendations to serve our customers with a safe self storage experience. All facilities are operating without physical contact between customers and store managers. Rental agreements are processed online, allowing customers to safely store their belongings without the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.
