Celebrating 25 Years with Karl Wenger

Our success at Extra Space Storage is attributed to the exceptional individuals who work here. This year marks the 25th work anniversary of Karl Wenger, the Vice President of Information Security and Compliance, who has been instrumental in shaping the company’s technology and security programs. Karl’s journey at Extra Space Storage began as a System Administrator and has since progressed through various roles, including Director of Network Services, Sr. Director of Network Services, and Sr. Director of Information Security. Currently, he manages the cybersecurity team and ensures the safety and accessibility of the company’s systems for employees, customers, and partners.

Karl joined Extra Space when a boss from a previous job asked him to join the company. Karl was already familiar with the leadership of then-CEO Spencer Kirk and knew from previous experience that it was certain to be a great company with a strong culture. Years later, this has proven to be true, as Karl has witnessed and contributed to the company’s growth and success.

Reflecting on Karl’s impact, Jeff Stott, SVP of Information Systems, shared, “Karl has had a tremendous impact on shaping our technology and security programs over the years. He does an excellent job managing the delicate balance of keeping our information safe while ensuring our systems are easy to access for employees, customers, and partners.”

In celebration of this milestone anniversary, we asked Karl to share a bit about his 25-year career and what he’s learned during his time at Extra Space Storage.

What is your favorite thing about your work?

Outside of working with incredible people, I love that my work is challenging, interesting, and always changing. We are literally trying to stop bad people (hackers) from doing bad things to the company. Because it’s difficult, it gives you a real sense of accomplishment.

What are you most proud of in your work?

I’m proud of the ability to evolve and change with the company. The opportunities for continuous learning and development have been abundant. Rather than stagnating in one role, I’ve been afforded the chance to expand my skill set, take on new challenges, and pursue avenues of personal and professional growth. Whether through training programs, mentorship opportunities, or stretch assignments, the company has invested in my development throughout my career.

What is your favorite part about seeing Extra Space grow over the years?

If I had to boil it down to two words, it would be “the people.” It’s also been fun and exciting to see the company grow and change and be a part of that change. Beyond the tangible benefits, there is a profound sense of purpose that comes with staying loyal to a company for an extended period. Knowing that my work contributes to something greater than myself—whether it be advancing security or technology, seeing employees and peers grow and rise to higher positions, or serving customers with excellence—has all been deeply fulfilling.

What are some challenges you’ve faced at work, and how did you overcome them?

Growth, scale, and the evolution of technology are constants in IT. This makes the job challenging but also exciting. I think a positive attitude and a company culture that embraces change and hard work have been key to overcoming obstacles.

What are some of your fondest memories of your time at Extra Space Storage?

The teamwork and camaraderie of coming together as an organization to solve big challenges, like evolving our point-of-sale systems, large acquisitions like Storage USA and Life Storage, and the challenges of solving tough technology issues at scale. These shared experiences, challenges, and triumphs have forged bonds that transcend the confines of the workplace. This sense of community has provided me with a support system that has been invaluable, both personally and professionally.

What does Extra Space Storage mean to you personally?

Through periods of change and uncertainty, I’ve seen the company’s resilience and determination to overcome difficult challenges, emerging stronger and more resilient each time. This journey of growth has not only enriched my professional life but has also instilled in me a deep sense of pride and ownership.

What is something you appreciate most about your time at Extra Space?

I’m happy to see that, even with massive growth, the company has retained its strong culture, outstanding leadership, and talented people in all areas of the business. As I look ahead, I do so with gratitude for the journey thus far and a renewed commitment to continue contributing to the success of the company.
