Extra Space Storage recently completed an expansion project in Stuart, FL, adding approximately 320 new climate-controlled storage units and a total of 29,365 rentable square feet to the self storage facility located at 6195 S Kanner Hwy.

Led by Program Manager Mark Glasmire, the Extra Space Storage team constructed four single-story buildings at the property, repurposing existing slabs that had been used for outdoor boat and RV storage at the facility. According to Glasmire, having the existing slabs available made this project simpler, as the team simply needed to add buildings onto them.

But no self storage expansion project is without its challenges. One such challenge that came up for the team was an issue with a permit. The original Conditional Use Permit for the property—which designated the use of the land for self storage—had expired at the time of Extra Space Storage’s purchase of the property from another self storage company. As a result, Extra Space Storage had to go through a lengthy entitlement process to get the Conditional Use Permit extended and reinstated.

Another challenge encountered during the expansion was the area’s large natural watershed conservation, which was part of the existing property. Glasmire and the team had to verify that the original landscaping requirements were fulfilled. This required them to identify and take out all invasive plants and trees, then replant the plants and trees that had been removed from the previously-approved landscaping plan.

Though this caused a bit of a headache, Glasmire says the team’s hard work and patience paid off. “The site looks beautiful, and our storefront is much easier to recognize as well,” he added.

With the help of Senior District Vice President Kenny Speegle, District Manager Eddie Albino, the local managers, and the Extra Space Storage operations team, the expansion of the S Kanner Hwy storage facility was a success.
